Samsung Unveils DVD-Multi Drive (recordable) & DVD-ROM Drive (multi-read) at TECHXNY/PC EXPO

NEW YORK CITY (June 25, 2002) - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd (SEC) unveiled today its DVD Multi drive for recording. The DVD-Multi drive is the next generation product that combines DVD and CD function into one mechanism. It realizes read/write support for all DVD discs and CD-R/RW discs. DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW formats have been all approved by DVD Forum. SEC will display DVD-Multi drive during TECHXNY/PC EXPO at booth 2422 of RDVDC Pavilion, demonstrating the drive's media compatibility and DVD/CD storage flexibility. Samsung branded model of DVD-Multi drive will be released to the market in October 2002. SEC plans to launch DVD-ROM (Multi-read) in Sep., 2002 in advance.
The DVD-Multi drive supports DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW recording format compliant with DVD Forum and CD-R/RW. Each of DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW formats, has its own role and benefit. It is goal for SEC to provide users with all-in-one solution for all multimedia, such as data, audio, photo and video applications, by combining benefits of each DVD recoding format and CD-R/RW. Users can experience security of write-once, the flexibility of rewritable, broad compatibility and a choice of data volume such as 4.7GB, 700MB capacities.
With read/write support for all of the DVD Forum writable DVD specifications and read/write support for CD-R/RW discs, SEC's DVD-Multi drive will have broad appeal among consumers, businesses and professionals who want backward compatibility and a future-proof solution for all of their storage needs. Users will choose their recording media based on the volume and type of data being stored as well as the final application.
DVD-RAM: Offering the familiar random-access read and write performance of a hard drive, DVD-RAM provides almost instant retrieval of files or video frames. This capability, combined with DVD-RAM's built-in error correction, more than 100,000 overwrites and 30-year data life, make it an excellent solution for secondary data storage, backup/recovery and editing videos prior to pre-mastering. The DVD-Multi drive reads from and writes to bare DVD-RAM discs at up to 2x speed (equivalent to 18x CD rate).
DVD-R: The DVD-R General media's write-once format and 100-year data life make it an excellent solution for secure storage and archiving. In addition, because DVD-R General discs can be played back by most of the DVD video players and DVD-ROM drives in use throughout the world today, the discs can be easily shared. SEC's DVD-Multi drive writes to DVD-R General discs at up to 2x speed and reads the discs at up to 12x.
DVD-RW: Recorded sequentially, DVD-RW is good for streaming video applications. Users generally write data in a disc-at-once session, but multiple session writing can be accomplished if the disc has not been finalized. DVD-RW media has a data storage life of 30 to 50 years and supports 1x write speeds. Recorded data can be directly overwritten more than 1,000 times.
CD-R/RW: Smaller files can be stored on low-cost 700MB CD-Rs at up to 12x speed or on CD-RW discs at up to 8x speed. CD playback is at 32x. To ensure error-free CD recording, SEC's new multifunction drive includes buffer under-run technology.
SEC will introduce DVD-ROM drive with DVD-Multi Read function September this year.
CD playback is at 48x, DVD playback is at 16x. It has read compatibility with DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and CD-R/RW.
